Editorial Comment:
The Southern Ocean Research Partnership (SORP) is an integrated, collaborative, research consortium that aims to maximize conservation outcomes of Southern Ocean whales through non-lethal research on the status, health, dynamics and environmental linkages of their whale populations and the threats they face.
The aim of SORP is to develop a multilateral, non-lethal scientific research program that will improve the coordinated and cooperative reporting of science to the International Whaling Commission.
The symposium and workshops Living whales in the Southern Ocean in 2012 is a major SORP initiative to review the strengths and weaknesses of current methods for studying living whales in the Southern Ocean.
Japan must withdraw from the IWC and focus its attention on the vital issue of management of the world's fisheries to ensure 'Food Security' for its people and the peoples of the World. We have reviewed this issue in the article 'Why think of Whales at Christmas' .
The fundamental conservation issues that Member Nations of the IWC must devote time and energy to are clearly set-out in the 'Conservation and Values - Global Cetacean Summary Report' prepared by the Australian Government. Lets hope common sense brings a fresh start to business conducted at this years meeting of the International Whaling Commission in June.
