Sixty seven Australian communities, like Hervey Bay, are participating in the Humpback Icon Project.
Each of these communities have adopted a known individual Humpback Whale from The Oceania Project's Fluke Catalogue. To celebrate the annual return of the Humpback Whales, each Humpback Icon Community organises a wide-ranging program of annual activities.
With the support of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), The Oceania Project is producing short movie profiles on the Humpback Icon whales which you can download to your computer, iPad, iPhone or iPod to enjoy. The Icon profiles will enable you, your family and Friends to share the wonderful experiences we have had with the whales while carrying out our research in Hervey Bay over the past thirty years.

This project evolved as an important element of the first National Day of Action to Protect Whales. With IFAW’s support and the participation of Whale and Dolphin Watch Australia (WADWA) the idea quickly blossomed into a nationwide day for communities and whale watch operators around the coast of Australia to raise their concern over the planned killing of Australian humpback whales.
