Established in 1998 by Senior Research Scientist Dr Peter Gill, the Blue Whale Study pioneered blue whale research in Australian waters. The long running blue whale research program investigates the ecology of blue whales in biologically rich upwelling waters off south-west Victoria and south-east South Australia.
Led by Dr Gill, with support from a core team of scientists and volunteers, Blue Whale Study Inc. (BWS) conducts vital research, education, industry liaison, government consultation and presents research findings through scientific publications, conferences and lectures. BWS aims to secure the long-term conservation and population recovery of blue whales and maintenance of their feeding habitat in the Bonney Upwelling and adjacent waters.
Dr Gill is recognised internationally as contributing significantly to the understanding of blue whale ecology in Australia. He is an Honorary Research Fellow at Deakin University, Warrnambool.
