14     Breeding and Birthing in the sub tropical waters of The Great Barrier Reef

The northern most point of the southern humpback whales migration journey is the Great Barrier Reef, where mating and birthing take place.

RIGHT: The mask-like white patch along the left hand side of this whale inspired the name 'Phantom', here seen with her 1998 calf 'Raoul'. It is believed that Humpbacks usually calve every second year but 'Phantom' was an exception to this as we saw her in 1997 with a young calf which was named 'Opera'.
